There are different kinds of beaches with different kinds of waves. North of the river, flat beaches extend for miles and miles. Beaches like Pontal and Piracanga offer safe surfing conditions with their large, slow-breaking waves formed by off-shore sand banks. The river-break Boca da Barra has one of the largest and most perfect waves in Brazil.

South of the river there are various smaller beaches with different face directions, widths, and bottoms. Prainhas, São José, Engenhoca, Havaizinho, Camboinha: all of these beaches are framed by rocks on either side, as the surrounding topography is hilly. The under-sea rock formations form, depending on the direction of the swell, different point-breaks.

Close to the village Tiririca is the main surfing point in Itacaré, well known throughout Brazil for its consistent surf. This beach is the center of surfriding in Itacaré. Its waves are fast and strong and are surfable nearly 365 days of the year. It is also the spot where the Surf Association of Itacaré trains and regional and state competitions are held.
